The Dream Compass

Going after your creative dreams is no small feat. It might possibly be the hardest and most fulfilling thing you'll ever do.

So it's not surprising that many of us struggle from time to time. We get lost in our own dreams, not knowing which way is forward and which is backwards.

We start doubting ourselves if didn't already.
We get stressed and overwhelmed.
We focus on the wrong things.
We get firmly stuck.

At those times, wouldn't it be nice if you had a compass that had all the answers? That could tell you exactly what you need to do to make your dream come true?

Now you probably expect me to say I have that magic compass, but I don't believe in that kind of magic. No one has all the answers.

But I do believe that each and everyone of us are able to figure things out, if we have the right questions to ask of ourselves.

What if you could make your own compass when you get stuck? Your very own dream compass guiding you forward?

Where am I going?

Let's start with the basics. What do you actually dream of? Have you put it into words? Or is it just a jumble in your head?

  • Put your dream into words. It's okay if you aren't clear on the details, and you're allowed to be as grand as you like. Think of it as confession time.
  • Now, why do you have that dream? What would it mean to you if it came true? Why is it important?

Where am I?

Time to figure out where you are in relation to your dream. Have you started walking? What have you done so far? What has worked and what hasn't? What have you learned?

How do I get there?

Your dream is probably not around the next corner - there's some travelling to do. There's no point in trying to pat out the whole way from here to there, because things will change along the way. But you need a direction, a sense of what your next step should be.

Knowing where you're at, what is the logical next step? What do you need to do first? What is the thing that will allow you do

What is holding me back?

Let's talk about what's holding you back in this journey to your dreams. Is time? Fear? Lack of practice and skills? Lack of knowledge? What can you do about it?

Are you holding yourself back, and if so, why?

What is most important to me?

Dreams are filled with possibilities and can take a life of their own. They may need to be railed in a bit, if they run too wild. Especially if others are allowed to influence your dream.

Take moment to consider what choices you may need to make in going after your dreams. What is most important to you? What do you value most in this journey?

Your Dream Compass

Now it's time to put together all you've figured out to make your dream compass.

Your dream and your why - that's north.

Where you're currently at and what is most important in that phase. Ignore the rest! Ignore what you'll have to figure out a year from now. Your focus should be on what this state demands of you, or you'll definitely overwhelm yourself.

What's holding you back and what you can do about it.

What is most important to you.
